  • Number formation for Class 4 means arranging a set of given digits to build different numbers — such as the greatest or smallest 5-digit or 6-digit number. Students use their understanding of place value (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, and lakhs) to construct numbers with or without repeating digits.

  • To form the greatest 5-digit number, arrange the given digits in descending order (largest first). For example, from the digits 3, 9, 2, 1, 4:

    • Arrange in descending order: 9, 4, 3, 2, 1
    • Greatest 5-digit number = 94,321

    If 0 is one of the digits, it can be placed anywhere except the first position.

  • To form the smallest 5-digit number, arrange the digits in ascending order (smallest first). However, if 0 is one of the digits, it cannot be the first digit. For example, from the digits 7, 0, 5, 8, 1:

    • Ascending order would be: 0, 1, 5, 7, 8 — but 0 can't come first
    • So swap the first two: 1, 0, 5, 7, 8
    • Smallest 5-digit number = 10,578

  • The key difference is the place value chart:

    • 5-digit numbers go from 10,000 (ten thousand) to 99,999 — the highest place is the ten thousands place.
    • 6-digit numbers go from 1,00,000 (one lakh) to 9,99,999 — they have an extra lakhs place.

    A 6-digit number is always greater than any 5-digit number.
